요약 : The need for faithful and effective leadership for Christian education in the congregation is examined in light of the history of Protestant religious education in the United States. The present situation, in which church volunteers are often frustrated, demoralized, or burned-out, and additional volunteers are frequently difficult to secure, is diagnosed as symptomatic of a chronic problem confronting Christian education. Affecting every aspect of congregational life and mission, volunteer leadership questions are of particular concern for Christian education, given the number of qualified teachers required to sustain the church's teaching ministry, a strong tradition of dependence on volunteer teachers in Protestant congregations, and concern about the role of the teaching ministry in equipping volunteer teachers and workers.

요약 : In seeking a solution to the enigma of working with volunteers, many pastors and church educators have turned to the emerging field of volunteer management for assistance in recruitment, training, motivation, coordination, and recognition of volunteers. Volunteer management principles, based on insights from humanistic psychology and management theory, have been adapted to the needs of the church, but often without attending to theological dimensions of volunteering.

요약 : The objective of this thesis is to establish a sound and responsible theological perspective on volunteer ministry. The lack of integration between theology and the human sciences in the religious volunteering literature is identified as a research problem. A theology of vocation, rooted in the Reformed tradition, guides theological inquiry, with Calvin as teacher. The concept of vocation in Calvin's life, ministry and teaching is explicated, then subjected to critical reinterpretation in light of contemporary theology, especially Moltmann.

요약 : A method is developed and tested by which insights of the human sciences are clarified and evaluated. Maslow's motivational hierarchy is subjected to critical reflection vis-a-vis a theology of vocation, as is Dewey's concept of vocation. Among the findings: vocation provides a guiding principle for working with volunteers. The volunteer principle in Christian education is affirmed on theological grounds, but the concept of church volunteer is redefined--not self-fulfillment, but fulfilling God's calling, as the church gathered and the church scattered.
