요약 : The influence of Calvinism on Southern Baptist understanding of the atonement has diminished since James Petigru Boyce formulated his theology after the Princeton Calvinism of his day. Following Charles Hodge and Francis Turretin, Boyce proffered a doctrine of the atonement which emphasized the decree of God, penal substitution, and the predestination of the elect to salvation. For Boyce, the atonement was a divine transaction which resulted in an actual reconciliation of the sovereign God and his elect.

요약 : At the turn of the century, Edgar Young Mullins modified Boyce's Calvinistic doctrine of atonement. Influenced by pragmatism, personalism, and experiential theology, Mullins redefined law as the revelation of a personal God and penal substitution as the pragmatic and personal means to man's salvation. He rejected Boyce's transactional atonement in favor of man's experience of God in Christ by faith and softened Calvinism's theology of election by denying irresistible grace and affirming the universality of the atonement.

요약 : Walter Thomas Conner furthered Mullins's partial rejection of Calvinism by ultimately formulating the doctrine of atonement in terms of the Christus Victor motif. In his later writings, he rejected a penal understanding of the atonement because of his belief that God's righteousness is redemptive rather than retributive. He modified Calvinism's conclusion that man is passive in regeneration to include man's active decision of faith, a stance which had as its source the assertion of the universal nature of Christ's work.

요약 : Dale Moody totally rejects Calvinism. Influenced by the biblical theology movement, he views the cross as a sacrificial event in which man meets God. Election is in Christ, and faith determines man's eternal destiny. In his complete rejection of Calvinism, Moody proffers an atonement which is universal and almost exclusively subjective.

요약 : The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the gradual rejection of Calvinism by representative Southern Baptist theologians in their doctrines of atonement and to evaluate the validity of such a rejection in light of sound theological research. The study reveals that Boyce's Calvinistic doctrine of atonement is untenable and that, of the four theologians, Conner offers the most balanced interpretation of the cross.
