요약 : This study of the structure of Calvin's intra-Christian polemics began as an investigation of his view of the Jews and Judaism. Although references to biblical and post-biblical Israel are abundant in Calvin's writings, these are rarely used to recommend attitudes or actions to be adopted toward Jews. Far more frequently, these references are enlisted to defend "sound doctrine" against the errors of Calvin 's Christian contemporaries on the theological left and right. (Ford Lewis Battles has coined the term "calculus fidei" to describe Calvin's method of seeking truth between pairs of opposing falsehoods.) Whether the image of Jewish religion in any given passage is positive or negative therefore depends upon which Christian opponent he is attacking in a given context. Against the Anabaptists, whom Calvin believes exaggerate the discontinuity between Old Testament and New, figures from among the "ancient folk" are depicted as faithful respondents to the grace God has continually offered since Abraham. The Roman Catholics err, on the other hand, by exaggerating the continuity between the testaments, particularly by replicating the Temple cult in the Mass. Against them, Calvin presents ancient Israel as the history of works righteousness and apostasy. References to New Testament era and post-biblical Israel, predominantly negative, are almost all directed against the "Papists," whose blind imitation of antiquity Calvin calls "mere Judaism." A variation of this general pattern may be seen in Calvin's pastoral writings, as well as his polemical ones; when he seeks to console and encourage his fellow Protestants, especially those persecuted for their faith in Catholic France, he offers the righteous remnant of Israel as a model for faith in the face of suffering.
