- 요약 : Historical attention has recently focused on a reevaluation of the theological parties which formed the backdrop to the English Civil War. This has resulted in greater recognition of a Calvinist presence within the Church of England in the decades prior to 1640. This dissertation contributes to this ongoing project by examining the Calvinist theology of four seventeenth-century Anglican bishops: John Davenant, Joseph Hall, James Ussher, and Thomas Morton. Building on the body of current secondary literature the thesis argues that the above figures are representative of moderate Calvinism, a label which has appeared in recent studies, however heretofore without adequate definition. This study profiles the moderate Calvinist position through an in-depth analysis of these four episcopal examples. It concludes that moderate Anglican Calvinism represented a Reformed attempt to respond to the challenges of Arminianism through the formulation of a theological system that would uphold human accountability and hypothetical universalism without sacrificing principles of divine sovereignty and a supralapsarian order. The thesis also contends that moderates feared and sought to avoid the pole of extreme predestinarianism no less than Arminianism.

- 요약 : Evidence indicates that as the decades elapsed moderate bishops attempted to avert further theological fragmentation by moving increasingly away from a predestinarian toward a more providentially based order, one which emphasized obedience to established institutions as expressions of God's will. The platform which moderate Calvinists articulated, however, was often ambiguous in nature, of a sophistication which lent itself to misinterpretation by more radical voices from both Arminian and Puritan camps. As such moderates were unable to provide a satisfactory theological synthesis and ironically may actually have provided a path for the influx of an alternative theological system.
