■520    ▼aThe  theologies  of  John  Calvin  (1509-1564)  and  Friedrich  Schleiermacher  (1768-1834)  are  compared  as  comprehensive  interpretations  of  Protestant  faith  with  respect  to  two  questions:  What  is  religion?  and,  What  is  Christian  religion?  The  thesis  is  advanced  that  the  classical  and  liberal  exemplars  of  the  Reformed  tradition  in  Protestant  theology  are  best  compared  when  these  two  questions  are  systematically  investigated.  Contrary  to  the  claims  advanced  by  neo-orthodox  theologians  Karl  Barth  (1886-1968)  and  Emil  Brunner  (1889-1966),  Calvin  and  Schleiermacher  are  depicted  as  thinkers  who  share  a  similar  set  of  questions  and  concerns  in  spite  of  the  fact  that  between  them  stands  the  eighteenth-century  Enlightenment.  This  revised  comparative  approach  makes  it  possible  for  the  historian  of  Protestant  thought  to  discern  a  trajectory  that  moves  from  the  Reformation  of  the  sixteenth  century  to  the  historical  interpretation  of  religion  and  theology  characteristic  of  nineteenth-century  liberal  Protestantism.
