초록/해제
요약 : There has been a dynamic tension in Reformed theology between two theological poles. The "christocentric" pole has been typified by a focus on Christ as the unique revelation of God. It distrusts claims rooted in nature, reason, or culture, instead relying on the various "solas"--Christ, scripture, grace, faith. The "theocentric" pole draws from the creation account in Genesis, general revelation, common grace, the imago Dei, and the sovereignty of God.
초록/해제
요약 : With the work of Calvin, Abraham Kuyper, Barth, H. Richard Niebuhr and Gustafson providing important frameworks, the christocentric-theocentric tension in Reformed theology is re-examined. Current developments, especially the rise of the so-called postmodern, post-Christian age, served as the impetus for this reconsideration.
초록/해제
요약 : The bulk of the dissertation examines four contemporary Reformed theologians, Richard Mouw, Nicholas Wolterstorff, George Hunsinger and William Placher. Beyond summaries of their work, questions of epistemology (the "postmodern") and culture and politics ("post-Christian") receive extended discussion.
초록/해제
요약 : Mouw and Wolterstorff, represent the more theocentric position, with a heritage in the Dutch neo-Calvinism of Kuyper. Their use of a creation-based ontology allows them to be comprehensive, yet can it allow for the contextual and particular? Their theocentric approach has a strong need to shape society, but can it as Christian power and leverage wanes?
초록/해제
요약 : Hunsinger and Placher are examples of the christocentric position, bearing a resemblance to Barth. Seeking to begin with Christ, how are traditional Reformed themes such as God's sovereignty conveyed, and more broadly, what place is left for human insight and other truths? Their reliance on "Yale" approaches requires them to distinguish themselves from purely socially constructed understandings of truth, and relativism. In culture and politics, can they speak both publicly and from a particular, confessional voice?
초록/해제
요약 : I conclude that the Reformed tradition is more able to address the epistemological condition of postmodernism than the post-Christian cultural circumstances. Although more sympathetic to the christocentric pole, I argue that the entire Reformed tradition must give more attention to ecclessial identity and practices.
