■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  surveys  the  writings  of  John  Calvin  regarding  the  proper  harmony  desired  between  temporal  authority  and  the  Kingdom  of  Christ.  The  central  methodological  commitment  of  this  project  is  to  allow  Calvin  to  interact  within  his  own  context  and  not  force  Calvin  to  adhere  to  a  context  four  hundred  years  removed  from  his  own  death.  The  first  chapter  provides  a  description  for  the  project  and  a  brief  history  of  the  interaction  between  the  power  wielded  by  the  church  and  that  utilized  by  the  throne.
■520    ▼aChapters  two,  three,  and  four  display  the  relevant  material  from  the  Genevan  Reformer,  surveying  the  Calvin  corpus,  with  special  attention  given  to  Calvin's  genre  distinctions  and  the  historical  context  of  his  works.  These  chapters  demonstrate  the  interaction  between  Calvin's  writings  and  the  historical  context  of  the  sixteenth  century.
■520    ▼aChapter  five  juxtaposes  Calvin's  behavior,  as  seen  through  his  correspondence  and  his  letters  of  dedication,  against  his  stated  position  demonstrated  by  his  writings.  This  chapter  analyzes  the  structure  of  his  dedicatory  epistles  as  well  as  the  statistical  breakdown  of  his  overall  correspondence.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  demonstrates  a  growing  awareness  within  Calvin  regarding  the  interwoven  nature  of  sixteenth-century  politics  and  theology.  This  project  shows  that  Calvin  remained  committed  to  his  written  program  of  establishing  a  harmonious  society  by  fostering  a  inter-dependent  relationship  between  the  authority  of  the  church  and  the  power  of  temporal  government.  His  commitment  to  this  position  vexes  many  contemporary  scholars.
