요약 : The introductory first chapter of this dissertation examines Matthew Fox's well-known claims about Hildegard of Bingen as a "creation-centered theologian," and it also uses the work of Paul Ricoeur and Gaston Bachelard to provide a hermeneutical framework for interpreting the images used by Hildegard. This is followed by chapter 2, which provides background material on Hildegard's life and writings. The four chapters which make up the body of the dissertation (chapters 3, 4, 5, 6) present Hildegard's theology of creation in four themes: God and the divine act of creation, the relationship between God and non-human creation, the relationship between God and human creation, and the relationship between human and non-human creation. Within these four themes, the dissertation articulates the content of Hildegard's images (e.g., God as fire, light, water) and their functioning as a symbolic theology. The result is a deeper understanding of the metaphorical structure of Hildegard's work.

요약 : The dissertation then assesses the implications of the above for the formation of an environmental ethic (chapter 7). Hildegard's theology of creation is placed in dialogue with two contemporary environmental ethicists, James Nash and Thomas Berry. The resulting conversation develops along three central themes: the desacralization of non-human creation, hierarchy, and anthropocentrism. This same seventh chapter evaluates Matthew Fox's assessment of Hildegard in light of the findings about her work in the preceding chapters. The overall result of the dissertation is a clearer understanding of her theology of creation and of its implications for the formation of a contemporary environmental ethic.
