■520    ▼aThis  thesis  examines  the  period  of  the  English  reformation  from  the  publication  of  Tyndale's  New  Testament  in  English  (1526)  to  the  death  of  Edward  VI  (1553)  as  to  the  use  and  understanding  of  holy  scripture  by  the  reforming  party.  The  tenets  concerning  holy  scripture  of  the  English  reforming  party  are  presented  exegetically  from  the  writings  of  the  likes  of  Thomas  Cranmer,  Nicholas  Ridley,  Hugh  Latimer,  William  Tyndale,  and  Miles  Coverdale  and  from  such  documents  as  the  Episcopal  injunctions,  the  Bishops'  Book,  the  King's  Book,  the  Book  of  Homilies  and  the  Prayer  Books.
■520    ▼aBesides  detailing  the  tenets  to  be  found  among  the  several  figures  and  documents  of  reformation  England  and  the  peculiarities  of  each,  the  study  shows  a  broad  consensus  about  holy  scripture  among  the  English  reformers--corroborating  broader  and  more  general  previous  studies.  For  the  reformers  in  England,  holy  scriptures  was  the  very  embodiment  of  God's  word  to  mankind;  it  was  the  paramount  and  supreme  authority  for  the  Christian  and  the  Christian  community  in  all  matters  of  faith,  morals,  and  discipline--against  which  or  conjointly  with  which  no  other  authority  (ecclesiastical,  hierarchical,  traditional,  or  inspirational)  could  be  placed.  This  authority  was  self-authenticating  and  came  from  the  very  power  of  God  Himself  through  the  agency  of  the  Holy  Spirit,  who  was  both  the  author  and  interpreter  of  holy  scripture.  Holy  scripture  was  understood  to  contain  all  things  necessary  for  eternal  salvation  and  to  be  the  touchstone  of  all  truth.
■520    ▼aHermeneutically,  the  English  reformers  rejected  the  medieval  allegorical  and  symbolic  interpretation  of  holy  scripture  in  favor  of  what  they  called  a  literal  one--a  natural,  reasonable  reading  of  the  text  as  it  appeared  (some  of  which  was  symbolic  and  allegorical).  On  the  whole,  holy  scripture's  meaning  and  intent  were  clear  and  understandable,  and  so  holy  scripture  should  be  available  within  the  context  of  the  Church  to  all  believers  in  their  mother  tongue:  for  reading,  instruction,  and  comfort.  Holy  scripture  was  not  just  a  theological  textbook  but  the  practical,  dynamic  word  of  God  to  His  people;  it  was,  as  such,  to  be  studied  and  held  in  deep  affection  by  all.
