요약 : My dissertation examines the religious paintings of the Lucas Cranach workshop in Wittenberg during the first decades of Lutheran reform. I argue that a new function of religious images within the framework of the new faith distinguishes Lutheran art from Catholic art of the early modern period, as well as from art of the later Middle Ages. Some of these functional characteristics include pronounced didacticism, antithesis as a rhetorical strategy, and deflection of veneration.

요약 : I begin my study of Cranach's Lutheran art in 1529, the year when Cranach painted the first definitively Lutheran image, the Allegory of Law and Grace. The Weimar Altarpiece, the Cranach workshop's last major commission during Cranach the Elder's lifetime, was consecrated in 1555. Its completion represents the conclusion of the initial phase of Lutheran art production.

요약 : My dissertation is divided into five chapters. The first chapter on the Allegory of Law and Grace explains how this image recapitulates the key notions of Lutheran Grace. The clarity of Lutheran doctrine and the villainizing of everything "Other" is part of its rhetorical strategy and a defining feature of Cranach's Lutheran images. The Schneeberg Altarpiece , the subject of the second chapter, stretches the Law-and-Grace iconography by inserting it into a triptych and expanding it to embrace a wider variety of motifs. In the third chapter, I argue that the Wittenberg Altarpiece defines the Lutheran sacraments; and the fourth chapter describes how the Weimar Altarpiece embellishes the function of the retable by transforming it into an epitaph. Two conservative subjects persist among Cranach's Reformation inventions: the Madonna, and Adam and Eve. I argue in chapter five that the Madonna pictures persist because the Virgin has become model of faith rather than a divine intercessor, and that Adam and Eve retain their importance as warnings of the human condition that requires Lutheran salvation.
초록/해제
요약 : My dissertation examines the varieties of Lutheran art in the Cranach workshop based on Luther's writings, and analysis of patronage and viewing spaces. The Cranach workshop's production represents the genesis of Lutheran art.
