■520    ▼aThe  modern/postmodern  shift  calls  for  a  radical  rethinking  of  mission  strategy.  This  dissertation  explores  the  organic  properties  that  enable  the  missional  church  to  be  translated  in  postmodern  contexts.  It  calls  for  authentic  Christian  community  that  is  both  biblically  sound  and  culturally  translatable  to  any  context---especially  those  shaped  by  postmodernity.
■520    ▼aThis  is  an  exploratory  study.  The  aim  here  is  to  understand  the  cultural-ecclesial  crisis  and  offer  missiological  perspectives  for  an  embodied  apologetic  that  will  redemptively  engage  postmodern  cultures.  The  primary  question  for  this  dissertation  is  "How  can  the  gospel  and  community  be  translated  in  and  beyond  postmodern  cultures?"  The  research  was  done  in  the  tension  of  four  relevant  perspectives:  biblical,  cultural,  theological  and  missiological.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  is  organized  into  three  parts.  Part  1,  "Interpreting  the  Postmodern  Shift,"  answers  the  question,  Where  is  the  church  today  in  relationship  to  the  current  modern-postmodern  shift?  Part  2,  "Recovering  a  Translatable  Church,"  addresses  the  question,  How  can  the  church  retrieve  and  live  out  its  identity  as  a  missional  community  in  such  turbulent  times?  Part  3,  "Translating  the  Church  in  Postmodern  Cultures,"  responds  to  the  question,  What  opportunities  does  this  postmodern  crisis  bring  that  may  provide  openings  for  translating  the  gospel  and  community  in  our  increasingly  postmodern  world?
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  differentiates  between  the  beliefs  and  practices  that  separate  modernity  from  postmodernity,  critiques  the  prevailing  paradigms  of  modern  Christendom  and  unfolds  a  biblical  ecclesiology  that  can  sustain  the  church  with  the  organic  momentum  to  reproduce  within  and  beyond  postmodern  cultures.
