요약 : This thesis explores the tensions between the ideals and traditions of Reformed Christianity and the realities of schooling in the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools. This exploration focuses on four fundamental questions: Is the "Christian education" offered by the OACS a radical alternative to mainstream public high schooling? What obstacles stand in the way of the OACS realizing its ideals? Is there a basis for developing a common vision among OACS educators? Can the OACS remain true to its Reformed Christian traditions without transforming the structure, mission, curriculum, pedagogy and evaluation system in its schools?
초록/해제
요약 : Typically three arguments are employed to support the claim that OACS high schools are significantly different from other high schools. First, they espouse a Reformed perspective of Christian living which is radically opposed to the medieval-Thomist and Enlightenment-Cartesian world and life views that dominate public education. Secondly, OACS high schools promote biblical moral standards which produce a healthy Christian environment. Thirdly, the culture of the school is conducive to learning, i.e., the schools are small and parent-run; the community is characterized by ethnic, socio-economic and religious homogeneity; and the teachers see their job as a calling.

요약 : Standing over against these arguments is evidence which suggests that the ideal of an alternative Christian high school is still far from being attained. Although the Reformed faith repudiates the medieval and modern world views, OACS high schools have not broken free from them in these key areas: mission, curriculum, pedagogy, structure, and evaluation. Two major obstacles hamper the emancipation of the Reformed Christian high school. The traditional model of schooling, which the OACS adopts whole-heartedly, obstructs the integration of faith, learning, and life because this deep structure is inherently connected to a paradigm that views scientific and religious knowledge as mutually exclusive and also give thought priority over action. The absence of a unifying vision among OACS educators also hinders their cause.
초록/해제
요약 : My thesis says that despite its intentions to the contrary, and with all its "cultural" advantages and Christian rhetoric, the OACS has not produced a truly Reformed Christian alternative to the modern high school. To do so the OACS must go beyond changing the personality of the high school to transforming the essentials of schooling, i.e., the mission, curriculum, pedagogy, structure, and evaluation must be consistent with the Reformed vision of Christian living. Without such a transformation the OACS will continue to grow more comfortable with preaching one thing while practising another.
