요약 : This dissertation incorporates in one study most of the major themes of historical research in sixteenth-century Germany: the Peasants' War, the Reformation in the imperial cities, the Radical Reformation, popular religion, as well as political, social, and economic history. It is based upon an abundance of published sources and archival documents from Rothenburg, Nuremberg, and Wurzburg.
초록/해제
요약 : Rothenburg was a major center of the Peasants' War; the uprising in Franconia began in the imperial city's hinterland and spread to other territories. Karlstadt (Luther's co-worker and later opponent) lived in Rothenburg during the entire rebellion. Karlstadt's writings had a major influence on Anabaptist theology. His involvement in the rebellion in Rothenburg is an important theme of this dissertation.
초록/해제
요약 : The dissertation is divided into three parts. Part I is a narrative account of the Peasants' War in Franconia from the initial protests until the crushing defeat of the rebellion and the pacification of Rothenburg's territory. Unpublished transcripts of interrogations of former rebels provide new insights into the growth and evolution of the rebel band.
초록/해제
요약 : Part II examines the relationship between the Reformation in Rothenburg and the rebellion. The growth and social structure of the Protestant faction of the town is studied. After discussing the careers of those village clergy who became involved in the rebellion, it is argued that the peasants knew little or nothing about the Reformation and the Protestant rhetoric in the rebel writings was superimposed by the pastors who acted as scribes and secretaries for the peasants. The link between Anabaptism and the rebellion is discussed; many members of the group around Karlstadt later became Anabaptists.
초록/해제
요약 : Part III examines the political and economic consequences of the uprising by focusing on the feud between the bishopric of Wurzburg and Rothenburg. The petty nobles of Franconia felt compelled to recover their lost honor by seeking revenge on Rothenburg. The city's hinterland was devastated; almost all the villages were pillaged and burned. Throughout Franconia, imperial cities such as Rothenburg, Windsheim, and Dinkelsbuhl, declined in power, while territorial princes such as the bishop of Wurzburg, gained in power.
