초록/해제
요약 : Is separatism compatible with Reformed ecclesiology? Some separatists and some Reformed thinkers have said no. I compare a particular theory of separatism (J. Gresham Machen's) with a particular Reformed ecclesiology (Charles Hodge's), evaluating the two for their consistency.
초록/해제
요약 : J. Gresham Machen thought that the gospel is grounded in historical events. The historicity and proper interpretation of those events are teachings that are essential to the definition of Christianity. Since liberalism denies or reinterprets these fundamentals, it is incompatible with Christianity. Liberals should not remain in Christian churches. Churches that knowingly tolerate liberals in their teaching office conspire to propagate an anti-Christian message. They are no longer true churches of Jesus Christ. They must be abandoned by the people of God, who are commanded to unite with a true church.
초록/해제
요약 : Charles Hodge's ecclesiology rests upon the theory of a universal, invisible church that unites all saints to Christ and to one another. While the invisible church comprises those who possess true faith, the visible church includes all who profess the true faith. People profess the true faith by affirming the essential or fundamental doctrines. All who make this profession are members of the visible church. All churches that profess the fundamentals are true churches of Christ, even if they err at other points. Membership in a particular church is morally obligatory for all Christians, but it is politically voluntary. The Presbyterian Church has structured itself on constitutional grounds, recognizing both the powers of church judicatories and the prerogatives of the individual conscience. Stated in these terms, Hodge's ecclesiology embodies a significant tradition of Reformed ecclesiology.
초록/해제
요약 : Machen's thought is quite compatible with Hodge's on the doctrinal nature of Christianity, the unchristian nature of liberalism, the voluntary nature of the church, and the confessional nature of Presbyterianism. Some inconsistencies do occur on the limits of Presbyterian constitutionalism. Taken on balance, Machen's separatism is generally compatible with Hodge's ecclesiology. Therefore, at least some articulations of Reformed ecclesiology may consistently permit some forms of separatism.
