요약 : The epistle to the Hebrews is a call to perseverance addressed to an ailing community. The author's strategy in bringing this notion home involves recurring references or allusions to the Mosaic exodus which are designed to depict the readership's present experience as the eschatological exodus to the promised rest. A second, even more pronounced means of exhortation are christological references employed to remind the readership of blessings experienced as well as anticipated. What Hebrews has to say about the Holy Spirit on the whole is intimately related to these concerns. In contrast to the dominant scholarly consensus, the present study will show that the author of the epistle writes out of a well developed pneumatology characterized by a unique blend of Jewish traditions and some (seemingly) innovative modifications informed by the writer's christological and eschatological convictions.

요약 : The main body of the work is arranged with a view to the contexts in which the Holy Spirit is mentioned, namely, the warning passages (III.), scriptural quotations/interpretation (IV.), and the letter's pivotal discourse about the priesthood of Christ (9:11--14, V.). Since both 3:7--11 and 10:26--29 qualify as warning passages, but at the same time can be subsumed under different categories, they are considered not only under III., but also under IV. (3:7--11) and V. (10:26--29), respectively.

요약 : References to the Holy Spirit are an integral part of the make-up of the warning passages, where the author is particularly keen on presenting Israel's plight in the wilderness as the paradigm that the potential apostates under the New Covenant will recapitulate (with more severe consequences, of course) if they fail to stay the course. The role of the Spirit here resembles that of the divine ruach during Israel's desert trek, in that the author's predominant pneumatological concern is to underscore the Spirit's function as guide of the wandering people. At the same time, the warning passages indicate that retention of the Spirit is conceived as being contingent on the pilgrim's perseverance. Comparative studies show that this particular concept of conditionality, although virtually absent from other NT literature, is well-documented in corresponding Jewish sources.

요약 : When the Holy Spirit quotes the Hebrew Scriptures, oracles are recycled in such a way that the new version of the text qualifies as prophecy. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
