■520    ▼aIn  this  study,  the  writings  of  Charles  Spurgeon  are  explored  to  promote  an  eloquence  or  rhetoric  of  the  Holy  Spirit  for  preaching  theory  and  practice,  which  in  turn,  underscores  an  emerging  theory  of  gospel-oratory,  distinct  in  purpose  and  kind  from  traditional  rhetorical  theory.  Spurgeon's  "rhetoric  of  the  Spirit"  discovers  a  four-fold  theory  for  gospel  communication:  speaker,  message,  audience,  and  God.  Therefore,  while  Spurgeon  embraces  traditional  rhetorical  theory  and  upholds  an  oratorical  purpose  of  instructing,  pleasing,  and  moving;  a  rhetoric  of  the  Spirit  adds  prayer  and  testimony  to  this  preaching  purpose.  Similarly,  to  the  five  canons  of  rhetoric,  traditionally  associated  with  Aristotle,  there  is  added  a  sixth  canon,  which  refers  to  the  immediate  and  partial  inspiration  of  the  Holy  Spirit  in  the  presence  of  the  preaching  event.  The  preaching  event,  therefore,  is  understood  as  a  "plural-event"  in  which  God  pairs  his  voice  with  the  preacher's  voice,  such  that  God's  voice  is  heard  in  the  soul  of  the  hearer  while  the  preacher  prayerfully  speaks  the  Bible  with  his  human  and  fallable  voice.  Furthermore,  communication  problems  deeper  than  "noise"  and  misunderstanding  exist,  constituting  preaching  as  an  act  of  spiritual  warfare,  which  aims  to  overcome  and  heal  the  effects  of  sin  and  Satan  in  the  human  soul.  Implications  for  preparation,  style,  and  delivery  of  sermons  are  offered,  including  the  use  of  imagination  and  emotion  when  preaching.  What  results  is  a  homiletic  understanding,  which  constitutes  preaching,  not  as  a  solitary  act,  but  as  a  communal  activity  of  sovereign  instrumentality,  by  which  God  becomes  the  primary  rhetor  in  the  preaching  event  for  the  Christ-ward  transformation  of  the  souls  of  both  preacher  and  hearer.  Spurgeon's  historical  setting  forms  the  context  for  this  study,  offering  hints  at  application  for  contemporary  homiletic  theory  and  practice  with  suggestions  for  further  study.
