요약 : God does not appear often in the stories of the Hebrew Bible. As the primary national history progresses from Exodus through Kings, God's appearance becomes less and less common and eventually ceases completely. This trend is evident both within small narrative units and over the course of the text as a whole. There is a startling contradiction here. While there can be no question that the Hebrew Bible as a whole is centered on God and God's relations with Israel, God appears in most biblical stories only indirectly. Given this paradox, I explore a set of methods that expert and non-expert readers can use to understand the character of God, who is both the single most important character in Hebrew Bible narrative and absent from the majority of it.

요약 : In each chapter, I examine one the following four literary methodologies: narrative criticism, reader response criticism, intertextuality, and feminist criticism. I present several scholarly works that utilize the approach. Then I ask two questions. What are the strengths and weaknesses of this approach as biblical scholars are currently employing it? What are the benefits of this approach for understanding God as an absent character in Hebrew Bible narrative? Finally, I apply the approach to a primary text from the Hebrew Bible, paying special attention to the characterization of God.

요약 : Although each of these methods has some limited value, the best approaches share three characteristics. First, they reveal something new about a biblical text. Second, they place limits on modern readers and the kinds of interpretations they may produce. At a minimum, such methods must require readers to acknowledge that the Hebrew Bible was originally an ancient text. Third, they allow the reader to participate in the production of literary meaning. I conclude that the only methods that meet all these criteria are reader response criticism focused on an imaginary ancient reader and feminist "culturally cued literary" criticism. These two methods recognize both the ancient nature of the biblical text and the reader's contribution to the production of literary meaning.
