요약 : Scholars have recognized that John Owen (1616-1683) targeted clearly identified opponents: Arminians, Socinians, Roman Catholics, Anglican formalists, and Quakers. This study argues from Owen's own statements, his express recognition of "enthusiasts" as such, and the coherence of his theological arguments, that he dealt with a more subtle theological opponent, namely, Seventeenth-Century antinomians. Besides rejecting the law's third use, Seventeenth-Century antinomians held to five presuppositions: (1) Illuminism: new revelation and direct assurance; (2) Irrationalism: intellect bypassed by regeneration; (3) Immediatism: immediately efficacious operations of the Holy Spirit; (4) Essentialism: infusion of divine essence by regeneration; and (5) Hyper-Supernaturalism: operation of divine grace not dependent on means.

요약 : Owen affirmed preparation for grace and glory against the quietism of Seventeenth-Century antinomians and maintained the bond of grace and duty in every aspect of the Christian life by recognizing that absolute and conditional promises function together and that the Holy Spirit works in the believer in a way of concurrence so as to preserve the Christian's liberty. Against illuminism, Owen rejected its disjunction of the word and Spirit and upheld cessationism and self-examination. Against irrationalism, Owen assigned a leading role to sanctified reason which meditates on Scripture and declared that grace entered through the understanding. Against immediatism, he insisted on faith and repentance as conditions of conversion and preaching for regeneration based on a morphology. Against essentialism, Owen affirmed the necessity of fresh grace for exercising created graces and spiritual gifts. Against hyper-supernaturalism, Owen declared that conditional promises respecting growth in sanctification require performance of Christian duties. Seventeenth-Century antinomianism had a dangerous notional view of faith which vitiated prayer and meditation on Christ's glory, both vital for vivification of graces and mortification. Owen countered that spiritual-mindedness and ceaseless conflict with sin must evidence the reality of regeneration and recommended "universal" obedience to prevent sin.

요약 : The recovery of the Puritan concept of seeking is vital for Reformed churches to recover evangelistic fervor and spiritual depth. Reformed pastors should embrace Owen's approach of experiential Calvinism rather than doctrinal indifferentism or triumphalism.
