■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  offers  a  narrative  ethical  reading  of  the  portrayals  of  the  early  community  of  believers  in  Acts  2:41-47  and  4:32-35.  Interpreting  these  passages  in  the  narrative  context  of  Luke-Acts,  the  study  argues  that  the  believers  are  practicing  a  distinctive  form  of  Greco-Roman  friendship  in  accordance  with  God's  community-creating  activity  in  their  midst.  Further,  echoing  the  Lukan  themes  of  proclamation,  hospitality,  and  the  sharing  of  possessions,  these  narrative  summaries  are  charged  with  the  potential  to  shape  the  moral  imaginations  and  ethical  lives  of  those  who  read  them.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  opens  with  an  introduction  in  which  the  thesis  is  formulated  as  a  response  to  questions  about  the  ability  of  narratives  to  impact  the  moral  experiences  of  readers.  The  first  chapter  follows  with  a  summary  of  twentieth-century  literary  and  ethical  interpretations  of  Acts  2:41-47  and  4:32-35.  The  chapter  concludes  with  an  articulation  of  a  narrative  ethical  method  that  combines  elements  of  narrative  criticism  and  theology  with  contemporary  insights  into  ethical  interpretations  of  narratives.
■520    ▼aThe  second  chapter  examines  the  Greco-Roman  friendship  maxims  "friends  have  all  things  in  common,"  and  "friends  are  of  one  soul."  After  summarizing  Aristotle's  understanding  of  friendship  in  the  Nichomachean  Ethics,  the  study  evaluates  how  distinctive  literary  contexts  impact  the  use  of  these  maxims  in  works  by  Plutarch,  Diogenes  Laertius,  and  Iamblichus.
■520    ▼aFollowing  a  discussion  of  summary,  scene,  and  repetition  in  narrative  analysis,  the  third  chapter  offers  an  interpretation  of  Acts  2:41-47  that  describes  the  distinctively  Lukan  adaptation  of  the  friendship  maxim  to  its  preceding  context.  In  addition  to  describing  the  friendship  practices  of  the  community,  the  reading  highlights  God's  role  and  the  believers'  joy  as  important  for  ethical  interpretation.
