요약 : In recent scholarship there is a trend to understand Jesus' ministry chiefly in terms of the restoration of Israel, and thus his message of repentance and forgiveness has been construed primarily as a call to the nation corporately. This understanding, which challenges the traditional paradigm that stresses Jesus' call for individual conversion, has been promoted most notably in the work of N. T. Wright.

요약 : Wright defines repentance as "what Israel must do if YHWH is to restore her fortune at last," with Jesus proposing the answer to be "abandon revolutionary zeal."¹ Wright sees his understanding of Jesus' use of "repentance" as a return to the historical context in which Jesus lived rather than the ahistorical conversion sense of the word. In other words, instead of "repentance" referring to the negative side of the conversion, Jesus is primarily calling Israel to turn from their revolutionary zeal and be restored from exile. Wright argues this restoration for the nation of Israel is what Jesus means by "forgiveness." Hence, in contrast to the traditional understanding of forgiveness as God's gracious response to sinners who have responded appropriately to Jesus, Wright argues forgiveness is "another way of saying return from exile."²

요약 : Scholars have been slow to respond to this argument for a primarily corporate and national emphasis. Most have neither incorporated nor adequately countered Wright's analysis. The objective of this dissertation is to discover how the canonical Gospels themselves present Jesus' teachings concerning corporate and individual repentance and forgiveness. This study of the four Gospels is preceded by a survey of the Jewish background for repentance and forgiveness, as well as the evidence for a lingering first century hope in a "return from exile." This survey provides the proper context for subsequent chapters, which examine how each Gospel displays the individual and corporate aspects of Jesus' proclamation of repentance and forgiveness.

요약 : Rather than seeking to overturn Wright's understanding of repentance and forgiveness wholesale, this dissertation argues that Wright's conclusions concerning corporate and individual repentance and forgiveness in Jesus' teachings need to be better balanced. On one hand, it is correct to affirm that repentance and forgiveness at times have corporate Israel primarily in view rather than the traditional individual conversion sense of the terms. Yet, on the other hand, this dissertation argues that Wright is incorrect to equate repentance with "what Israel must be do to return from exile" and forgiveness with "return from exile." The corporate aspects related to the return from exile should not be given priority in defining forgiveness and repentance. Though the terms can be related to the exile theme, this dissertation argues that by failing to keep a clear distinction between repentance/forgiveness and the exile, Wright has de-emphasized the individual, universal, and moral aspects of these concepts. It is more accurate to define what Jesus meant by repentance and forgiveness with broader meanings in which both the corporate and individual aspects of the terms can fit and then go into more detail explaining how Jesus could use these terms in different contexts.

요약 : Finally, this dissertation concludes by integrating each Gospel's portrait of Jesus to form a better understanding of the concepts and by examining implications of the study for the fields of hermeneutics, Jesus studies, and biblical theology.
