요약 : This dissertation is an analysis of the soteriological process taught by the seventeenth-century English Puritans. The study focuses upon the research of John Owen, Richard Sibbes, Stephen Charnock, and John Flavel. They provided a depth of information in their writings concerning the salvific process. Additionally, two ideas filter through the entire body of research: God as the initiator behind the salvific process, and the Trinity's involvement at every point.

요약 : This dissertation examines five aspects of the ordo salutis of the English Puritans. The first chapter establishes the justification for the research and methodology of the research. The second chapter examines the ideas of the Puritans concerning the doctrine of election. While the works of the four main men mentioned above are the bulk of the research, the writer did seek to provide additional information from other Puritans. The concept of election permeated the teaching and preaching of the Puritans and provided a foundation for the rest of their doctrines.

요약 : The third chapter provides a detailed examination of the Puritan's ideas of preparation. The period of preparation consisted of an unspecified amount of time that a sinner sat under the tutelage of God's Word. Another word used to describe that time was vocation. This chapter discusses the reasons for preparatory convictions. The Puritans surveyed man's heart, and believed in its utter depravity. The preaching and teaching of the Word stood as the major components to God's preparatory work. As they preached sermons and promoted the reading of the Word, they taught the Holy Spirit commenced His work in the hearts and minds of God's elect drawing them to salvation.

요약 : The fourth chapter focuses upon the moment of justification in the life of the repentant sinner. God's electing and preparing work regularly led to the life-changing decision to repent and place one's faith in Christ. However, the decision to repent and place faith in Christ was not man-made but part of the predetermined plan of God. Aspects of the biblical standards of repentance and faith are examined as part of this chapter.

요약 : The fifth chapter surveys the Puritan doctrine of sanctification, which is dissected into two distinct parts. One consists of mortification, or the deadening of sin, and the other consists of vivification, or living a new life toward holiness. To the Puritans, one without the other demonstrated a false sense of salvation and therefore a false grace. Genuine salvific grace brought two results, periods of denying the natural man of worldly lusts and periods of strong moral living.

요약 : The sixth chapter surveys the final part of the process known as glorification. The Puritans gained great encouragement in the assurance of preservation. The soul of the repentant sinner rested in God's hands. They placed their trust upon the promises of God to carry His own to the resurrection, and eternity. They longed for paradise, and knew God did not disappoint.

요약 : The seventh chapter concludes the research of the historical analysis of the salvific process of the seventeenth-century English Puritans. This chapter provides a synopsis of the contents of each chapter with a final evaluation of each step in the ordo salutis..
