■520    ▼aThe  relevant  literature  in  relation  to  expository  preaching  makes  bold  claims  as  to  the  effectiveness  of  this  style  of  preaching.  Therefore,  this  phenomenological  study  sought  to  determine  how  people  perceive  and  describe  their  experience  with  expository  preaching.  As  the  differing  experiences  were  described,  the  study  sought  to  determine  if  congregants  exposed  to  verse-by-verse  expository  preaching  for  a  minimum  of  three  years  perceive  that  they  have  a  changed  life  due  to  their  exposure  to  expository  preaching.  The  study  also  sought  to  determine  if  the  perceived  reality  is  supported  by  biblical  knowledge  and  life  application.
■520    ▼aSeven  guiding  questions  served  as  the  conceptual  base  for  this  study.  Data  were  collected  from  focus  groups  at  three  churches  that  use  expository  preaching.  Seventeen  total  congregants  participated  in  the  focus  groups.  The  focus  group  transcriptions  were  organised  and  analyzed  through  the  use  of  NVivo  research  software.  Six  key  themes  surfaced  during  the  analysis  process:  Bible  reading,  Bible  understanding,  conviction,  Christ,  Bible  knowledge  and  meaning,  and  lifestyle  change  and  application.  On  the  basis  of  the  key  themes  discovered,  conclusions  were  drawn.  These  conclusions  flow  from  the  seven  guiding  questions.
■520    ▼aCongregants  exposed  to  expository  preaching  are  motivated  to  read  the  Bible  more  and  perceive  that  they  understand  the  Bible  better  as  a  result  of  exposure  to  expository  preaching.  This  perception  is  not  supported  by  biblical  knowledge  and  application.  Expository  preaching  does  not  necessarily  lead  to  action-based  life  change  but  does  lead  to  internal  life  change  such  as  the  perception  that  the  Bible  is  better  understood.  Additionally,  congregants  perceive  that  action-based  life  change  happens  when  the  expository  sermon  is  further  discussed  in  a  group  setting.
