요약 : This dissertation investigates the role of the garden metaphor in the book of Isaiah. This research is based on the observation that, in not a few passages, YHWH's dealings with Zion are presented in terms of changing conditions of a garden, i.e., from its desolation to the recovery of its fertility. In There is Hope for a Tree (1985) Kirsten Nielsen demonstrated that the tree metaphor in Isa 1-39 plays a significant role in presenting YHWH's relationship with His people. However, given her pragmatic orientation, she focused on identifying Isaiah's and later redactors' intentions in using or reusing the metaphor. In comparison, this dissertation focuses on identifying the semantic function of the garden metaphor. In particular, it seeks to demonstrate that this metaphor serves to present YHWH's plan for Zion's transformation coherently in the book of Isaiah.

요약 : This dissertation proposes that the two vineyard songs in Isa 5:1-7 and 27:2-6 provide a basic scheme for the garden metaphor as a whole. On the one hand, the metaphorical concept YHWH IS A GARDENER AND ZION HIS GARDEN reflected in these passages forms the basic metaphor for the other occurrences of the garden metaphor. On the other hand, the metaphorical story of YHWH's cultivation of His garden Zion in 5:1-7 and 27:2-6 provides a general plot for the rest of the garden passages. Additionally, I investigate how the garden metaphor describing YHWH's dealings with the nations contributes to the message of YHWH's plan for Zion's transformation.

요약 : As for methodology, I employ Eva Kittay's perspectival theory of metaphor and supplement it with the methodological insights of George Lakoff and his co-authors Mark Johnson and Mark Turner. The former is used to analyze the passages in which the garden metaphor occurs. The latter is used to examine that the metaphorical concepts in those passages form a coherent metaphoric structure. In addition, in order to acquire an adequate knowledge of the ancient Israelite conception of gardens, I survey not only the relevant materials from the Ancient Near East and the Old Testament but also the ancient Israelite gardening practices during the pre-exilic period.
