■520    ▼aMainline  Protestant  Churches  in  the  United  States  have  been  in  slow  decline  since  the  middle  of  the  21st  century.  Church  historians,  theologians,  social  scientists  and  Christian  educators  have  been  looking  carefully  at  possible  causes  for  this  decline.  This  project  seeks  to  offer  an  examination  of  Christian  Education  in  congregations  and  the  role  parents  play  in  passing  on  the  faith  in  an  "ecology  of  faith  formation."    Borrowing  from  the  psycho-social  crisis  grid  offered  by  Dr.  Erik  Erikson,  I  have  claimed  the  term  "spiritual  generativity"  to  focus  in  on  the  cross  roads  of  psychology,  sociology  and  theology  in  the  ecology  of  faith  formation.
■520    ▼aIn  any  ecological  system,  there  are  necessary  elements  for  growth  and  sustainability  to  occur.    In  an  ecological  system  of  faith  formation  in  the  Christian  tradition,  I  posit  that  there  are  three  primary  elements  for  growth  and  sustainability  for  children  to  grow  into  spiritually  generative  adults.    Parents  are  usually  the  primary  element  for  faith  formation,  the  church  as  a  community  for  nurturing  faith  is  also  critical,  but  secondary.    Culture  and  context  has  a  part  in  forming  or  not  forming  children  into  spiritually  generative  adults,  especially  in  the  absence  of  the  primary  and  secondary  influences.  This  project  focuses  in  on  The  United  Methodist  Church  as  a  particular  ecology  of  faith  formation.
