초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation, as the title indicates, provides a detailed examination of the History of Redemption, the major historiographical work by Jonathan Edwards. The analysis is supplemented by an examination of both the historical background of Puritanism, as well as an over-view of the major landmarks in Puritan historiography up to 1739.
초록/해제
요약 : A discussion of the significance of Edwards as an intellectual and theologian, together with an analysis of his importance to Christian historiography preface the examination of the contents of the History. Motives for composition and an over-view of the background to its writing, coupled with a brief look at textual matters introduce the detailed exegesis of the work.
초록/해제
요약 : Periods I and II (covering the Old Testament and the Life of Christ respectively) are analyzed primarily from the perspective of their relevence to the content of Period III (covering church history from the Ascension to the Consummation).
초록/해제
요약 : Period III is discussed in detail, both with regard to the chronological development of Edwards' schema, and with regard to the examination of the major themes which comprize the mainstays of Edwards historiographical orientation. These major themes include: the activity of the Holy Spirit and revivals in the history of redemption, the dynamic of advancement and declension in church history, the identification of the Antichrist, pronouncements on the commencement and nature of the millenium, and the end of the world.
초록/해제
요약 : Edwards' views on church history after 1739 are examined chronologically via an analysis of the works Some Thoughts, An Humble Attempt, and the Apocalyptic Writings. The focus of this portion of the dissertation is on the modification of Edwards' views on church history in light of the events surrounding the Great Awakening.
초록/해제
요약 : The summary re-capitulates the major findings and conclusions from the examination of the History and the other works, as well as providing a discussion of the importance of Edwards for Christian historiography. The conclusion addresses the issue of the significance of Edwards as a historiographer from the perspective of several selected secondary authors. Several theories concerning the nature of the proposed final form of the History are given attention, and the author's convictions on this matter are also espoused. The bibliography includes both works cited and non-cited materials.
