요약 : The Social Gospel, viewed through its leading exponent Walter Rauschenbusch, is often regarded by most twentieth-century Protestants as a liberal attempt at making the message of the gospel relevant to the culture. His method of reuniting theology and ethics revitalized theological thought and became a watershed event for all of twentieth-century American Protestant Christian ethics. This dissertation demonstrates that Walter Rauschenbusch's articulation of a "social gospel" Christian ethic uncovered the inadequacy of the individualistic ethics of the nineteenth century and set a problematic with which twentieth-century Protestant Christian ethics must reckon. This dissertation is distinguished from other work by its claim that the legacy of Rauschenbusch's "social gospel" Christian ethic has endured throughout the twentieth century, shaping Protestant Christian morality by demonstrating the necessity of holding in union practice and belief, and being evident in those ethical formulations that are concerned for souls and society.

요약 : By utilizing three interpreters of twentieth-century Protestant Christian ethics---Reinhold Niebuhr, Carl F. H. Henry, and John Howard Yoder---this dissertation illustrates how both Niebuhr and Henry sidetrack Protestant Christian ethics by their inability to hold belief and practice in union; the key to Rauschenbusch's Christian "social gospel" Christian ethic. The fact that Niebuhr and Henry argue against Rauschenbusch's adequacy demonstrates the significance of the problematic he set up. The inadequacy of their attempts to reformulate Rauschenbusch's message for their respective audiences is the result of ignoring the necessity of holding belief and practice in union. Yoder, it turns out, is illustrative of Rauschenbusch's linking of belief and practice by articulating a Christian ethic that is not sidetracked by overly focusing on practice or belief. Yoder exhibits neither the excess of concern for society that marked Niebuhr's approach, nor distinct orientation that is based on the urgency of evangelism that characterized Henry's. Rather, he displays an ability to avoid the failures inherent to these models by acknowledging the necessity of regeneration as the basis for a Christian ethic, demonstrating an authentic rendering of Rauschenbusch's call to embody Jesus' message of the Kingdom in the world and is evidence of his ability to incorporate the union of belief and practice adequately. Yoder's work is representative of twentieth-century Christian ethics that carries on the legacy of Walter Rauschenbusch.
