■520    ▼aThe  problem  addressed  in  this  dissertation  is  the  decrease  in  number  and  the  diminishing  role  of  single  women  appointed  as  Assemblies  of  God  missionaries.  The  research  delineates  the  statistics,  1914--2000,  and  analyzes  some  of  the  contributing  factors.  The  percentage  of  single  women  has  declined  from  over  40%,  to  less  than  5%  of  the  missionary  force,  despite  the  fact  that  the  most  significant  and  fruitful  role  of  women  in  the  denomination  has  been  in  the  area  of  foreign  missions.
■520    ▼aHistorical  research  identified  women's  roles  in  missions  in  the  years  just  prior  to  the  organization  of  the  Assemblies  of  God  (1914)  and  also  the  many  gifted  women  associated  with  the  ministries  of  early  male  Pentecostal  leaders.  Case  studies  of  the  first  sixty  single  female  missionaries  who  served  with  the  denomination  reflect  a  bridge  between  preceding  movements  that  affirmed  women  and  the  Assemblies  of  God.
■520    ▼aThe  analysis  of  archival  data  yielded  several  factors  influencing  the  decrease.  The  three  major  factors  include  historical  events  and  the  issuing  of  official  documents,  mixed  theological  messages  in  publications,  and  restrictive  leadership  attitudes  based  on  cultural  perceptions.  Less  influential  factors  include  socio-economic  changes  in  women's  status,  conservative  evangelical  pressures,  and  the  effects  of  the  women's  movement  in  increasing  male  bias  against  female  ministers  (Pentecostal  history  notwithstanding).
■520    ▼aThe  principal  results  show  a  continuing  decline  despite  new  positive  initiatives  through  publications.  The  decrease  is  seen  less  as  a  result  of  institutionalization  than  a  reflection  of  the  values  of  the  leaders  of  the  denomination,  who  from  its  inception  sought  to  circumscribe  the  ministries  of  women  while  granting  them  credentials  to  minister.
■520    ▼aIt  is  hoped  that  the  research  will  encourage  male  advocacy  for  women  in  ministry  and  also  affirm  female  applicants  for  missionary  service.  Unless  channels  of  service  open  for  women  in  the  US  to  gain  ministry  experience  that  qualifies  them  for  missions  appointment,  or  unless  other  experience  is  accepted,  the  decline  will  continue  and  gifted  women  will  join  other  sending  organizations.
