요약 : This study seeks to establish the pervasive presence of language from the Greco-Roman conceptual world of ideal friendship in the Fourth Gospel and to identify how that language functions. Integrating audience criticism with other critical approaches, the author demonstrates how the friendship motif provides an important narratological tool of characterization in the Fourth Gospel. As the authorial audience repeatedly encountered "echoes" of the conceptual world of ideal friendship, they would have been driven (consciously or otherwise) to question why such language was so fundamental to the author's account of the story of Jesus. This study concludes that the language of ideal friendship provided a unique means for describing the closest possible relationship in the Greco-Roman world, a relationship of absolute intimacy. Used to characterize Jesus' relationship with the Father, such language becomes a potent tool in constructing the Fourth Gospel's characteristically high Christology. Moreover, when the Fourth Gospel is read sequentially in light of Greco-Roman notions of ideal friendship it becomes apparent that friendship language serves as a tool not only for characterizing Jesus' relationship with the Father---particularly in the first half of the gospel---but also for characterizing his relationship with his followers. The dependency of the latter process on the former points to a startling implication of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus---an implication that reflects a Johannine innovation: Followers of Jesus are invited to enjoy a level of intimacy with him that can actually---and perhaps only---be compared to the level of intimacy that he enjoys with the Father.
