■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  traces  a  history  of  Sojourners    magazine  from  its  birth  in  1971  to  2005.  Sojourners  has  argued  that  it  is  an  evangelical  publication,  so  this  study  focuses  on  the  evangelical  characteristics  of  Sojourners.  Upon  this  claim,  this  dissertation  uncovers  key  features  that  fit  David  Bebbington's  definition  of  evangelicalism.  In  each  chapter,  I  analyze  a  certain  evangelical  characteristic  that  Sojourners  emphasizes---radicalism,  conversionism,  Biblicism,  and  activism.  I  also  argue  that  Sojourners'    unique  arguments  for  evangelical  characteristics  are  crucial  components  of  contemporary  progressive  evangelicals  in  the  U.S.
■520    ▼aSojourners  initially  grew  out  of  the  anti-Vietnam  War  movement,  and  it  has  remained  in  its  strong  pacifist  position  throughout  its  history.  Furthermore,  Sojourners  has  always  had  deep  concerns  for  social  issues  and  constantly  addressed  justice  as  it  responds  to  the  social  and  political  context.  It  is  this  peace  and  justice  discourse  that  I  extensively  examine  in  this  dissertation  through  crucial  issues,  including  the  Vietnam  War,  threats  of  nuclear  weapons,  a  consistent  ethic  of  life  that  collectively  deals  with  abortion,  torture,  and  the  death  penalty,  women's  issues,  and  finally,  poverty.
■520    ▼aMoreover,  this  dissertation  argues  that  the  peace  and  justice  discourse  is  not  only  Sojourners'  primary  emphasis,  but  it  has  also  become  a  vital  characteristic  of  contemporary  progressive  evangelicalism.  The  significance  is  that  Sojourners  has  been  an  incredibly  important  source  that  has  helped  to  shape  and  influence  progressive  evangelicalism  in  the  U.S.
