요약 : Recent studies have established the significance of the Princeton tradition and its biblicism for the basic system of fundamentalism. Among those who shared this tradition, some were to be called fundamentalists while others were not. This dissertation investigates the Princeton Theology in this distinction. How did the Princeton Theology influence some to become fundamentalists, while others who shared that tradition remained simply as conservatives who were not militant at all? This study addresses that question by examining the Presbyterian conflicts in the early twentieth century.

요약 : This thesis argues that the Presbyterian conflict of the period should be seen in ecclesiological perspective. The ecclesiological convictions of different parties in the Church acted and reacted, mutually developing and furthering the entire conflict. Thus this study investigates the extent to which a Princeton ecclesiology was expressed in Princeton Theology; the extent to which Princeton ecclesiology contributed to the formation of fundamentalist ecclesiology; and the extent to which fundamentalist ecclesiology assumed a prominent role during the conflict in the Presbyterian Church.

요약 : Several major issues are developed through the study. First, in the Princeton tradition, an ecclesiology became the watershed between mere conservatism and fundamentalism. Here Erdman and Machen as the representatives of the later Princeton Theology are compared on their basic theological positions. Second, the fundamentalist ecclesiology, with the entire system of fundamentalism, is derived from the Princeton Theology. Several theories are particularly important: The strict criteria for the officers of the Church, as both the symbol of purity and the guarantor of orthodoxy; a "high church" view in which the assembly superintended all the institutions within the church for the purpose of doctrinal purity; and the theory which saw the Church as a theological voluntary society formed by individuals who agreed in their doctrinal opinions. Third, the fundamentalist ecclesiology generally continued and was strengthened throughout the time of turmoil. Fundamentalists, however, first assumed the high church view for the doctrinal ground, but abandoned it after the assembly's theological position was broadened.
