요약 : This dissertation provides an exploration of the Matthean Posteriority Hypothesis (MPH), a solution to the Synoptic Problem which has been largely neglected in the history of scholarship. The MPH, in its simplest forms, is the view that the author of the Gospel of Luke used the Gospel of Mark as a source and that the author of the Gospel of Matthew used both the Gospel of Mark and the Gospel of Luke as sources.

요약 : Chapter 1 introduces the study and provides a brief survey of the works of twelve scholars, from the eighteenth through twenty-first centuries, who have defended various forms of the MPH. Chapter 2 discusses two lines of evidence which, it is argued, support the MPH. The first line of evidence is textual---seven sets of parallel passages are shown to contain clues that Matthew knew the contents of Luke's Gospel beyond merely the double tradition material. The second line of evidence, involving a study of strings of verbatim agreements in the Synoptic Gospels, supports the view that Matthew depended directly on Luke. This chapter also includes a discussion of Luke's Sondergut parables, in which it is argued that Matthew could have known this material, yet still have chosen to omit it from his Gospel.

요약 : Chapter 3 explores evidence and arguments which can be seen as problematic for the MPH. Issues addressed include apparent alternating primitiveness between Matthew and Luke in the double tradition, Matthew's and Luke's discordant parallel passages (i.e., the Infancy Narratives, the Resurrection Narratives, and the Sermon on the Mount/Plain), and the compositional procedures of the last-to-write evangelist on different theories.
초록/해제
요약 : In Chapter 4 it is concluded that the MPH has been neither definitely proved nor disproved. It is a viable alternative to other hypotheses which deserves greater consideration and further investigation by scholars.
