요약 : This dissertation recognizes the uniqueness of popular messianic expectations in the Gospel of John and examines their role in the narrative from the perspective of narrative criticism. Of particular interest is the contribution of John's presentation of these messianic pronouncements made by groups and individuals to the achievement of the purpose of the Gospel as stated in John 20:31. This study breaks with past trends that let speculative reconstructions of the Sitz im Leben of the Fourth Gospel set the agenda. The use of a narrative-critical approach allows John's voice to be heard as the evangelist himself provides cues as to the function of popular messianic expectations in the narrative. As a result of this methodology, characters, settings, events, and implicit commentary are analyzed to determine the evangelist's strategy in the use of popular messianic expectations as he seeks to convince the implied reader to adopt his evaluative point of view and believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God.

요약 : In addition to an introduction and a conclusion (chapters 1 and 7 respectively), this dissertation contains five chapters. Chapter 2 surveys the rise and practice of narrative criticism in biblical studies in general and in the Gospel of John in particular. Chapter 3 establishes the Iegitimacy of narrative criticism in the study of the word of God before presenting the methodology adopted by this study. Chapter 4 lays the groundwork for a study of the individual scenes involving popular messianic expectations by providing a narrative-critical analysis of the purpose, evaluative point of view, and overarching plot of the Fourth Gospel. Chapter 5 presents a close narrative reading of the passages dealing with expressions of popular messianic expectations in John voiced by various groups (John 1:19-28; 6:1-15; 7:1-52; 12:20-36) by looking at settings, events, characterization, and implicit commentary. This investigation shows that John presents the erroneous and stubborn messianic expectations of many groups as the cause of their failure to recognize and accept Jesus' self-disclosure. Chapter 6 concludes the main body of the dissertation by adopting the same framework used in chapter 5 but applying it to scenes involving individuals (John 1:43-51; 4:4-42; 11:1-44). This analysis shows that John presents the messianic expectations of individuals as the climax of their recognition and acceptance of Jesus' self-revelation. These two chapters establish that John positions the various characters and their responses to Jesus as examples to emulate or avoid as he progressively defines what it means to believe that Jesus is the Messiah.
