■520    ▼aThe  present  dissertation  investigates  Luke's  use  of  four  centurions  who  play  significant  roles  in  his  two-volume  work.  In  addition,  it  is  argued  that  Luke  intends  Naaman  to  be  included  in  this  group  of  Gentile  military  leaders.  Luke  uses  these  five  men  in  a  chiastic  structure  to  support  his  theology  that  God  reaches  out  to  Gentiles  and  that  they  can  be,  in  certain  ways,  as  virtuous  as  Jews,  can  respond  to  what  God  reveals  to  them,  and  that  such  Gentiles  are  a  rebuke  to  the  unbelief  of  many  Jews.  Four  methodologies  are  used  to  establish  this  thesis.  A  historical-critical  methodology  shows  that  the  centurions  in  Luke's  writings  are  to  be  understood  as  historical  figures.  Redaction  criticism  indicates  that  Luke  makes  changes  from  parallel  accounts  in  Mark  and  Matthew  in  regard  to  these  men  to  make  theological  points.  Biblical  theology  indicates  that  the  findings  of  this  dissertation  support  Luke's  theology.  A  non-literary  methodology,  sociological  criticism,  seems  to  support  these  findings  as  well.  Chapter  one  introduces  the  issues  discussed  and  the  methodologies  used.  Chapter  two  looks  at  centurions  from  a  historical  perspective.  Chapter  three  deals  with  preliminary  issues  such  as  Luke's  theology  and  the  meaning  of  God-Fearers  in  his  writings.  Chapter  four  discusses  the  five  Gentile  military  leaders  in  detail,  including  their  connections,  which  support  the  idea  of  a  chiastic  structure.  Chapter  five  presents  the  chiasm,  suggesting  that  the  center  of  the  chiasm  is  the  centurion  at  the  cross.  Chapter  six  makes  some  concluding  remarks  and  suggestions  for  further  studies.
