요약 : Although the literary approaches of the last few decades have given credence to the existence of a literary unity of the fourth gospel (FG), the nature and extent of this unity are still debated. Charges of aporias have not been settled for all interpreters of the FG, and scholars have made little headway toward agreement on the structure and flow of the FG. In fact, consensus has not yet been reached concerning the substructure of the FG beyond the near-consensus on Dodd's proposed bipartite structure (John 1-12 and 13-21). More specifically, consensus has yet to arise concerning the unity and function of John 2-4 (a.k.a. the Cana Cycle) in relation to the gospel as a whole. Several perplexing features of these pericopae have contributed to the ongoing debate. First, while many outlines of the earlier chapters of John recognize the FG's inclusion of 2:11 and 4:54 either by beginning with 2:1 (the first verse of the pericope ending at 2:11) or ending with 4:54, there is no consensus either on whether to view 2-4 as a literary unit or as to why the FG brackets this section of pericopae from the rest of its work (i.e. on what the literary function of John 2-4 is in relation to the rest of the gospel). Second, within this section, the FG places the temple cleansing early in Jesus' ministry; this seems contrary to the Synoptics' placement of the temple cleansing at the end of Jesus' ministry. Because of this inconsistency, it is often postulated that this portion of the FG is arranged thematically, rather than chronologically. Not all scholars, however, agree with this premise. Third, the FG catalogues various belief responses, consistently concluding each pericope of this section with a belief response. In two pericopae, however, such belief responses are absent; in their place stand two very similar kerygmatic sections (3:17-21 and John 3:31-36). So similar are these sections that some have even postulated that the Baptismal Dispute of John 3:22-30 was displaced from Chapter 1 to its present location. Fourth, although some commentators have referred to John 5-12 as "the Festival Cycle," this festival motif is also clearly present within John 2-4 and 13-21, as these sections also document a significant Passover within Jesus' life. This, therefore, raises the question of the nature of the relationship between the two Passovers that occur before and after "the Festival Cycle" of John 5-12.

요약 : To establish that no consensus exists concerning the literary unity and function of John 2-4, the work begins by overviewing in Chapter 1 the history of interpretation of the FG. Chapter 2 then examines the literary unity of John 2-4, devoting special attention to literary structure and the FG's development of its chronology, geographical progression, plot and themes. Discussion of the literary unity of John 2-4 will begin with an overview of George Mlakuzhyil's raw data. Although many commentators propose outlines for John 2-4 in their works, none has gone to such great lengths in his examination of the structure of John 2-4, as has Mlakuzhyil in his The Christocentric Literary Structure of the Fourth Gospel. To best determine the literary structure of the various sections of the FG, he employs in this work no fewer than twenty-eight different literary, dramatic, and structural criteria in order. In comparison to other approaches to the structure of the FG, his multi-faceted approach is among the more vigorously supported of those proposed to date. Chapter 2 will next demonstrate that the FO's historiographical approach is arranged by means of chronological and geographical progression whereby all pericopae of John 2-4 occur during a single Passover pilgrimage early in Jesus' ministry. The chapter then reexamines Mlakuzhyil's proposed structure with this pilgrimage in view, demonstrating that the parallel structure and the alleged aporias of the temple cleansing, the Baptismal dispute, and the extended comments of 3:16-21 and 3:31-36 are all essential components within the author's shaping of this journey and serve kerygmatic functions within the narrative.

요약 : The literary function of John 2-4 can be examined in light of its relationship to the thematic relationship with the prologue (Chapter 3), John 5-12 (Chapter 4), and 13-21 (Chapter 5). In the examination of these sections, special attention is given to the development of central themes within the overarching metanarrative of the gospel. This focus on central themes is inspired in part by current trends within Biblical Theology that have moved beyond a theological-center approach to the unity of the Bible in favor of a central-themes approach. If a central-themes approach is helpful in discerning the unity and message of the biblical canon (a compilation of multiple authors), then this approach should be helpful in determining the unity and function of an individual text (or a portion of an individual text) written by one author. Focusing on themes distinct from those of the Synoptics, the FG's tendency from its prologue onward is to develop central themes within its historiography. An approach attentive to its central themes, therefore, seems especially appropriate when examining the FG. The goal of this approach is to determine the literary function of John 2-4 in relation to John's prologue, John 5-12, and John 13-21.

요약 : The potential advantages of this study are as follows: first, bringing greater clarity to the overall structure of the FG by helping to establish John 2-4 as a literary unit; second, demonstrating the literary integrity of John 2-4 and that alleged aporias/disruptions in chapters 2-4 are, in fact, both appropriate and even integral to the narrative; third, demonstrating a probable literary function of John 2-4; fourth, revealing a more nuanced and contextualized meaning of themes prominent in John 2-4; and fifth, showing a greater interconnection between John 2-4 and the contents of the larger work (thereby helping to establish the FG as a literary unit in its present form).
