■520    ▼aBuilding  on  existing  motive  clause  research,  this  work  extends  the  analysis  of  motive  clauses  by  examining  statements  of  divine  motive  across  the  whole  of  the  Hebrew  Bible.  Anscombe's  three  motive  categories:  backward-looking  motives,  motives-in-general,  and  intentions  are  used  as  a  basic  rubric  for  motive  types.
■520    ▼aChapters  1-3  provide  context  for  the  study,  a  review  of  the  relevant  literature,  and  the  research  method.  Chapter  4  is  a  survey  and  analysis  of  divine  motive  across  the  entire  Hebrew  Bible.  It  analyzes  the  distribution  of  the  various  motive  texts  and  types,  and  the  various  forms  of  the  divine  motive  statement.  After  a  presentation  of  significant  example  passages,  the  chapter  concludes  with  an  analysis  of  the  major  categories  of  divine  motive.
■520    ▼aChapters  5  and  6  provides  focused  attention  on  divine  motive  in  the  books  of  Ezekiel  and  Jeremiah.  These  two  texts  are  chosen  for  concentrated  treatment  primarily  because  combined  they  contain  25%  of  the  divine  motive  statements  in  the  Hebrew  Bible.  Each  of  these  chapters  provides  an  analysis  of  the  distribution  of  divine  motive  statements  within  the  book,  an  evaluation  of  the  various  forms  of  motive  statement,  a  discussion  of  the  relationship  between  divine  motive  and  key  themes  in  the  book,  and  a  survey  of  key  motive  texts.
■520    ▼aChapter  7  begins  with  a  comparison  and  contrast  of  the  use  of  divine  motive  statements  in  Jeremiah  and  Ezekiel  through  the  examination  of  three  themes  found  in  each  book:  the  temple  and  the  land,  audience  quotations,  and  the  knowledge  of  YHWH.  The  final  section  of  the  chapter  provides  a  summary  of  the  research  results  and  makes  suggestions  for  future  research  on  divine  motive.
■520    ▼aThe  research  demonstrates  that  divine  motive  statements  are  strategically  used  in  a  wide  variety  of  texts  and  that  inadequate  attention  has  been  paid  to  the  motive  statements  in  the  literature.  The  study  concludes  that  the  most  significant  motive  categories  are:  the  divine  character  traits  of  mercy,  justice,  faithfulness  and  love,  regard  for  the  divine  name,  knowledge  of  YHWH,  idolatry,  rejection  of  the  word/knowledge  of  YHWH,  and  the  sovereignty  of  YHWH.
