초록/해제
요약 : The purpose of the Gospel of John is to elicit in the hearer belief/trust (pisteuo) in Jesus (John 20:31), a relationship that brings with it abundant life (zoe) (John 10:10). Life in the Gospel of John is bound up with the concept of light ( phos) (1:4). John 9, like the larger gospel narrative, seeks to elicit in the hearer trust in Jesus and an experience of Jesus as light of the world. John 9 demonstrates that Jesus is the light of the world by showing the effect of this light on a man lacking inner light (blind) from birth. Most in antiquity thought of sight as inner light emanating out of a person through the eyes---not as light entering the eyes as we think of it today. The man is the perfect subject to demonstrate Jesus' effect as light of the world, since being born blind, any light that he acquires must have come from Jesus his healer.
초록/해제
요약 : John 9 serves the goal of the Gospel, belief in Jesus, by a combination of factors. First, it demonstrates Jesus is light of the world, is "from God," and "sent" to do God's "work." Second, the healed man acts as a positive example and places his trust in Jesus. Third, any fear of social isolation (being cast out of the synagogue community) is mitigated by acceptance into Jesus' community. Finally, sin is redefined as failure to accept Jesus as the one sent from God. Because of the assumptions about the blind in antiquity the blind man is transformed from one who is assumed pitiable, shameful and sinful; to one who is insightful, clever, and honorable, and courageous in the face of imposed social isolation.
초록/해제
요약 : The dissertation uses a multidisciplinary approach (analysis of syntax, narrative, social science, irony and wit, performance) to show how, in the rhetoric of John 9, the ancient performer of the Gospel leads an audience to embrace trust in Jesus and in so doing come to experience Jesus as light of the world.
