■520    ▼aThis  study  investigates  the  origin  and  significance  of  Jesus'  self-designation  $o\  \upsilon\iota\grave  o\varsigma$  $\tau  o\tilde\upsilon$  $\alpha\nu\theta\rho\acute\omega\pi  o\upsilon$,  as  it  occurs  in  the  Gospel  of  John.  The  title  in  John  is  investigated  independently  of  theories  about  the  use  of  the  designation  in  the  Synoptic  Gospels.
■520    ▼aAfter  previous  scholarship  on  the  question  is  reviewed  in  ch.  1,  evidence  is  presented  in  ch.  2  to  support  the  following  tentative  conclusions:  (1)  The  expression  in  John  has  no  connection  with  the  "one  like  a  son  of  man"  of  Daniel  7:13.  (2)  The  correct  translation  of  the  designation  is  not  "the  Son  of  Man,"  but  "the  Son  of  the  Man."  It  expresses  a  father/son  relationship  between  "the  Man"  and  Jesus.  (3)  The  motif  of  ascent  and  descent  associated  with  the  title  in  John  3:13  alludes  to  the  ascent/descent  terminology  in  Pr  30:4.  (4)  The  designation  itself,  as  used  in  Jn  3:13,  is  also  derived  from  Pr  30:1-4,  where,  on  one  reading  of  the  text,  "Ithiel"  is  the  son  of  "the  Man.".
■520    ▼aChapter  3  sets  out  the  text  and  interpretation  of  Pr  30:1-4  which  seem  to  be  presupposed  in  Jn  3:13.  It  is  determined  that  the  designation  "the  Man"  in  Pr  30:1  is  an  enigmatic  reference  to  God  in  an  oracular  riddle.  "Ithiel,"  the  son  of  "the  Man,"  is  therefore  the  son  of  God.
■520    ▼aIn  chapters  4-9,  the  occurrences  of  the  title  "the  Son  of  the  Man"  in  John  are  examined.  This  examination  confirms  the  tentative  conclusions  of  chapter  2.  The  designation  is  derived  from  Pr  30:1-4  and  identifies  Jesus  as  "Ithiel,"  the  son  of  "the  Man,"  i.e.,  the  son  of  God.  The  Son  of  the  Man  in  John  is  also  identified  with  other  Old  Testament  entities  to  explain  his  person  and  mission.  These  include  the  Servant  of  Yahweh,  the  Word  of  Yahweh,  and  others.
