요약 : Debate continues on how well Jesus knew and appropriated the sacred scriptures. Is it possible to determine his understanding of the sacred texts, theology, or mission from explicit citations assigned to him in the Gospels? Although this project assumes Jesus' knowledge of the scriptures as the Synoptic Gospels portray, it will not answer such historical questions directly. Rather it will redirect the discussion to focus on Jesus' use of scripture within each Synoptic Gospel as an important component of each Gospel's narrative hermeneutic. Furthermore, the main focus of this study is Jesus' explicit citations rather than implied citations, allusions or echoes. Although concentration on the latter areas have provided much insight into the way scripture was understood by Christians and Jews in second temple Judaism, the study of explicit citations provides the basis upon which we generally assume other allusions may be heard by first century audiences.

요약 : This is a literary study that utilizes the methods of composition criticism, narrative criticism, and comparative analysis to grapple with these explicit citations within the Gospel narratives. I assume that all components of the narrative represent the thought of the author (composition criticism). Also I analyze the explicit citations in their narrative sequence (narrative criticism), so as to appreciate the manner in which the Gospel authors provide information earlier in the narrative to shape conclusions later in the narrative. Finally, comparisons among the Gospels (comparative analysis) will allow me to highlight the particular emphases of each Gospel.

요약 : The conclusions of this dissertation provide insight both into the area of Jesus research and the area of each Gospel's own narrative hermeneutic. The Synoptic Gospels all agree that Jesus is the primary interpreter of scripture. Also, all three depict this activity as public activity. Finally, Jesus rarely appropriates scripture to speak directly of himself As for their narrative hermeneutics, each Gospel has its own emphasis. In Mark it is the knowledge of God's power and the ability to activate that power that interconnects with Jesus' overall persuasive ability to interpret scripture. In Matthew, Jesus distinguishes himself from numerous other Jewish leaders not by his ability to interpret, but by his ability to live out what he teaches. In Luke, there is an intimate link between interpreting scripture and belief in the resurrection.
