■520    ▼aThis  thesis  investigates  the  concept  of  empowerment  in  a  project  that  was  designed  in  a  twofold  manner.  First,  it  deals  with  how  the  laity  of  the  Church  may  become  empowered  to  perform  ministry.  Second,  it  deals  with  how  parents  may  become  empowered  to  become  more  skillful  in  dealing  with  their  children.  Both  of  these  topics  are  advanced  by  using  narrative  theory  within  two  small  group  settings,  the  Lay  Committee  and  parenting  support  groups.
■520    ▼aThe  thesis  provides  an  in  depth  investigation  of  several  key  concepts:  the  priesthood  of  all  believers,  parenting  from  a  Calvinistic  perspective,  and  narrative  theory.  These  key  concepts  are  employed  throughout  the  project  to  empower  the  Lay  Committee  to  become  involved  in  ministry  by  moving  them  from  seeing  themselves  as  people  who  are  not  capable  of  doing  ministry  to  a  group  of  people  who  actually  guide  and  direct  the  steps  of  the  project.  The  same  key  concepts  are  employed  in  the  parenting  groups  to  empower  them  to  move  from  being  parents  who  are  caught  up  in  seeing  themselves  in  a  negative  light  to  parents  who  are  able  to  see  moments  in  which  they  were  able  to  deal  with  situations  successfully.  With  both  the  Lay  Committee  and  the  parenting  groups,  the  power  of  the  narrative  transforms  them  into  a  cohesive  group  that  is  empowered  and  capable  of  doing  things  they  did  not  previously  imagine  possible.  By  listening  to  the  collective  narratives  of  the  groups  and  assisting  the  group  members  to  see  unique  moments  in  which  they  were  able  to  change  their  stories  from  tales  of  woe  to  songs  of  triumph,  participants  become  empowered  and  aware  that  they  have  changed.
■520    ▼aIncluded  in  this  thesis  is  a  model  that  may  be  used  in  working  with  parents  in  the  church  to  become  better  skilled  in  parenting.  It  also  includes  a  curriculum  that  provides  ideas  for  Christian  parenting.  There  is  also  a  model  for  developing  laity  into  capable  leaders  within  the  church.
