■520    ▼aEvangelical  pastors  are  often  conflicted  regarding  the  time,  energy  and  training  needed  to  balance  their  study  and  preaching  of  Scripture  with  their  individual  ministry  to  hurting  people.  The  author  suggests  that  pastors  can  leverage  their  understanding  of  hermeneutics  and  homiletics  to  improve  their  ministry  of  pastoral  care  and  counseling.  A  seminar  was  presented  to  pastors  suggesting  that  the  field  of  'interpretation'  offered  common  ground  among  the  areas  of  hermeneutics,  homiletics,  pastoral  care  and  counseling.  Pastors  were  instructed  as  to  how  to  use  five  specific  steps  in  the  interpretive  process;  namely,  pre-understanding,  authorial  intent,  context,  genre  and  meaning-full  application,  in  both  their  practice  of  exegesis  and  counseling.  As  a  result  of  this  project,  pastors  reported  seeing  more  direct  connection  between  hermeneutics,  homiletics,  pastoral  care  and  counseling,  pastors  reported  a  greater  interest  in  pastoral  care  and  counseling  and  pastors  believed  they  could  be  more  effective  in  their  individual  ministry  to  people.
