■520    ▼aThis  Ph.D.  dissertation  is  the  first  English  examination  of  the  life  and  writings  of  Erich  Sauer  and  his  relationship  to  American  Dispensationalism.  The  first  chapter  introduces  the  subject  matter  and  its  importance.  The  purpose  and  methodological  limits  for  the  dissertation  are  detailed  and  clarified.  The  dissertation  is  organized  with  an  introductory  biographical  section  followed  by  an  analytical  section  comparing  Sauer's  writings  with  three  periods  of  American  dispensationalism.
■520    ▼aThe  second  chapter  of  the  dissertation  provides  an  analytical  discussion  of  the  life,  ministry,  and  published  works  of  Erich  Sauer.  The  examination  considers  the  cultural,  historical,  and  theological  context  in  which  Sauer  lived  and  wrote.  Particular  interest  is  devoted  to  the  influence  of  biblical  theologians  who  molded  Sauer's  hermeneutical  methodology.  The  exploration  of  these  various  contexts  identifies  the  major  influences  that  shaped  Sauer's  life  and  thought.  Additionally,  significant  points  of  reference  will  be  established  within  a  chronology  of  Sauer's  life.
■520    ▼aThe  third  chapter  evaluates  the  work  of  Sauer  in  relationship  to  classic  American  dispensationalism,  represented  most  notably  by  C.  I.  Scofield  and  influenced  by  John  Nelson  Darby.  The  primary  focus  will  be  upon  the  dispensational  thought  of  Sauer  relating  to  the  numbering,  names,  and  primary  characteristics  of  dispensations.  Sauer's  dispensational  definition  and  organization,  his  Christological  and  theological  foci  of  the  dispensations,  and  his  perspective  on  the  unity  and  diversity  of  Scripture  are  examined.
■520    ▼aThe  fourth  chapter  examines  Erich  Sauer's  work  in  relationship  to  the  revised  American  dispensational  thought  of  the  1950s  to  the  1970s.  This  particular  period  is  important  since  Sauer's  works  were  then  translated  into  English  and  received  broad  appeal.  Sauer's  work  will  be  compared  with  the  principal  categories  of  Charles  Ryrie's  sine  qua  non  of  dispensationalism:  the  distinction  between  Israel  and  the  church,  the  hermeneutical  principle  of  literal  interpretation,  and  the  unifying  purpose  of  God  in  history.  Another  area  of  examination  considered  is  Sauer's  kingdom  ideas  since  a  noticeable  shift  in  kingdom  understanding  occurs  during  this  period  of  American  dispensational  thought.
■520    ▼aThe  fifth  chapter  will  consider  the  influence  of  Erich  Sauer  upon  the  proponents  of  progressive  dispensationalism  in  the  final  period  of  American  dispensational  thought.  A  presentation  and  analysis  of  Sauer's  covenant  ideas  identifies  the  critical  issues  involved  in  the  interpretation  of  biblical  covenants,  their  Christocentric  focus,  and  their  interrelationship.  A  comparison  of  Sauer's  hermeneutical  methodology  with  the  various  phases  of  American  dispensationalism  seeks  to  grasp  the  multidimensional  aspects  of  God's  divine  purposes,  the  extent  of  covenant  promise  and  fulfillment,  and  the  degree  of  continuity  between  the  Old  and  New  Testament.  These  findings  are  related  to  progressive  dispensationalist  thought  in  the  latest  period  of  American  dispensationalism  in  order  to  demonstrate  Sauer's  anticipation  of  and  influence  upon  progressive  dispensationalism.
■520    ▼aThe  final  chapter  offers  a  summary  of  the  major  points  and  conclusions  of  the  preceding  chapters.  A  comprehensive  understanding  of  Erich  Sauer's  dispensational  thought  is  presented,  along  with  a  summary  assessment  of  his  relationship  to  the  three  phases  of  American  Dispensationalism.  The  dissertation  concludes  with  insights  gained  from  the  research  as  it  relates  to  areas  for  further  study.
