요약 : The aim of the research is to combine logic-centered theology and operations-centered theology in an effort to locate an appropriate Christian foundation for a chaplain's identity. Research includes an analysis of the self-manifested pastoral identity among twenty-four clergy who responded to Larry Vandecreek's question of whether or not chaplaincy should become more scientific. The operations-centered theology of Seward Hiltner and the logic-centered theology of Alister McGrath is critically evaluated. Part of the critical evaluation is the attempt to ascertain clues to illuminate the pastoral identities of selected chaplains, Hiltner, and McGrath. The research culminates with an attempt to combine logic-centered and operation-centered structures and working assumptions to synthesize a public theology appropriate for the medical center milieu.

요약 : Philoxenosology, a theology of hospitality, is a logic-informed, operations-centered methodology specifically developed for clinical chaplains in a secular medical milieu. In philoxenosology, the interdisciplinary role of spiritual host is assigned to chaplains. A host receives, protects, cares for, and assists guests or strangers to their next destination. As a host, a philoxenosologist receives a patient by partnering a burden-bearing relationship. The foundational presupposition was that each person negotiated life in a context of victory and suffering. In response, and with an attitude of compassionate impartialism, the chaplain offered himself or herself as a fellow explorer and dialogue partner. A host protects and cares for a patient by applying the wisdom of the Christian body of divinity and ancillary disciplines to stabilize a sense of connection with a belief system that makes sense of the patient's milieu. Finally, assisting a patient to his or her next destination focuses on the restoration of a bond of peace in order to move the patient toward the ability to carry his or her own load. Carrying one's own load is the restoration of meaningful function in a patient's belief system.
