■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  was  to  study  the  use  of  illustrations  in  the  preaching  of  Charles  Spurgeon.  Theories  of  illustration  were  surveyed  as  they  related  to  Spurgeon's  theory.  Research  was  conducted  using  a  lens  adapted  from  Spurgeon's  own  principles  of  illustration  set  forth  in  his  book    The  Art  of  Illustration.  After  analyzing  ninety  sermons,  the  researcher  identified  Spurgeon's  consistency  between  his  theory  of  illustrations  and  his  practice  of  illustrating.  Significant  features  of  Spurgeon's  use  of  illustrations  were  summarized  and  implications  were  derived  for  the  use  of  illustrations  in  contemporary  preaching.
■520    ▼aAnalysis  of  Spurgeon's  sermons  revealed  that  he  used  illustrations  extensively  throughout  his  sermons  and  in  accord  with  his  theory.  In  all,  his  ninety  sermons  contained  382  illustrations.  Every  illustration  Spurgeon  used  complied  with  at  least  one  of  his  principles.  This  finding  proved  the  amount  of  attention  Spurgeon  gave  to  the  use  of  illustrations  in  his  preaching.
■520    ▼aAnalysis  of  Spurgeon's  use  of  illustrations  also  suggested  the  following  implications  for  the  use  of  illustrations  in  contemporary  preaching.  First,  illustrations  should  be  used  to  gain  attention,  offer  clarity,  assist  the  memory  of  the  hearer,  arouse  emotion,  and  persuade  the  hearer  to  some  action.  Second,  using  illustrations  to  keep  attention  is  a  matter  of  wisdom  as  the  preacher  takes  into  account  his  hearer's  capacity  to  listen.  Third,  illustrations  should  be  used  in  giving  a  gospel  appeal  to  the  hearer.
