■520    ▼aThe  thesis  of  this  study  is  that  the  Gospel  of  Matthew  significantly  employs  Isaiah  to  reveal  Matthew's  Christology.  It  will  be  shown  that  Isaiah  is  the  most  Christologically  significant  Old  Testament  book  for  Matthew.  The  Gospel  of  Matthew  cites  fifty-five  Old  Testament  references  that  prove  close  enough  to  be  classified  as  quotations.  Nine  of  these  fifty-five  are  quoted  from  Isaiah.¹  Isaiah  is  the  second  most  quoted  Old  Testament  book  in  Matthew  coming  in  second  only  to  Deuteronomy.  However,  Isaiah's  quotations  appear  to  bear  more  Christological  significance  due  to  the  fact  they  describe  the  person  and  ministry  of  Jesus  whereas  quotations  of  Deuteronomy  are  primarily  appeals  to  the  Mosaic  Law.  Further,  appeals  to  Isaiah  by  Matthew  are  present  in  every  major  Christological  title  and  develop  several  Christological  motifs.  By  studying  Matthew's  use  of  Isaiah  it  is  my  desire  to  get  at  the  heart  of  Matthew's  reading  of  the  Old  Testament  and  how  his  reading  of  the  Old  Testament  develops  into  Christological  formulation.
