요약 : The purpose of this project is to provide a four-stage pastoral counseling model that Christian chaplains can use with Christian soldiers experiencing spiritual injury as a result of combat exposure. The term "spiritual injury" is used to describe the condition where one's spiritual identity is in question. The individual suffering from spiritual injury has difficulty understanding how his or her view of faith, spirituality, relationship with God, and God's involvement in one's life can be true given the horrific experiences observed. A person suffering from spiritual injury doesn't have answers to the questions related to the trauma he or she has experienced, is unsure how to resolve this tension and find the answers, and/or may be doubting that God is trustworthy. The goal of the pastoral counseling model is to bring spiritual healing to Christian soldiers. Spiritual healing for the soldier would result in increased intimacy with God, enabling increased future spiritual resiliency because the soldier would have biblical responses to common questions soldiers face in combat regarding God's fairness, trustworthiness, presence, and involvement in Christians' lives. In seeking to resolve the tension related to the spiritual injuries of combat, soldiers attempt to foster meaningful relationships but sometimes those relationships have a toxic result and produce even further spiritual injury in the soldier. Soldiers can benefit greatly from understanding what the Bible has to say in response to their questions.

요약 : The counseling model developed in this project consistently increased soldiers' sense of intimacy with God. This would indicate that the topics covered were relevant and related to the felt needs of the Christian soldiers seeking counseling.
초록/해제
요약 : Chaplains agreed that the model was of sufficient length and that the order of the topics appropriately addressed the needs of the soldier and the chaplains' aims in providing biblical responses to the soldier's felt needs. The results of the study encourage the continued use of the four-stage pastoral counseling model in treating spiritual injury associated with combat exposure.
