■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  is  an  analysis  of  the  Old  Testament  usage  of  the  Hebrew  word    ['ot]  with  a  particular  emphasis  on  Isaiah  7:14.  A  basic  translation  of  the  word  is  "sign."  The  writer  focuses  on  the  way  the  authors  of  the  books  of  the  Old  Testament  used  the  word  in  their  writings  before  narrowing  his  focus  on  the  Isaiah  7:14  passage.  In  this  dissertation,  the  author  examines  how  the  Old  Testament  writers  employed  the  word  in  reference  to  specific  events,  which  were  called  signs.  Further,  the  distinction  between  miraculous  and  non-miraculous  signs  becomes  a  focal  point  for  the  research.

■520    ▼aThe  author  establishes  the  justification  and  methodology  for  the  research  in  chapter  one.  In  the  second  chapter  the  writer  examines  the  different  purposes  of  miracles  in  the  Old  Testament.  Seemingly  miraculous  events  are  common  in  the  Old  Testament,  and  the  author  analyzes  the  different  purposes  they  served.  The  writer  does  not  seek  to  prove  these  miracles  occurred,  only  that  the  authors  of  the  Scriptures  viewed  them  as  miraculous.
■520    ▼aIn  the  third  chapter,  the  author  provides  a  detailed  analysis  of  the  etymology  and  usage  of  ['ot].  The  word  occurs  seventy-nine  times  in  the  Old  Testament.  Many  of  these  passages  contain  events  with  miraculous  connotations  while  others  apparently  have  no  supernatural  element.  The  writer  surveys  the  nature  of  these  passages  and  seeks  to  determine  if  a  pattern  exists  to  judge  an  event  to  be  miraculous.  Attention  is  given  to  the  various  cognates  of  the  word  in  order  to  determine  if  other  languages  utilized  the  word  in  the  same  manner  as  Old  Testament  authors.
■520    ▼aThe  writer  provides  a  thorough  examination  of  the  etymology  and  usage  of  [mopet]  in  the  fourth  chapter.  The  word  is  almost  synonymous  with  ['ot],  but  is  generally  translated  "wonder."  Like  ['ot],  authors  used  the  word  in  reference  to  miraculous  and  non-miraculous  events.  The  distinction  between  the  two  words  shows  a  functional  difference  between  ['ot]  and  [mopet].  The  author  also  studies  the  Greek  cognate  for  [mopet]  to  discover  if  the  writers  of  Greek  works  understood  the  differences  between  the  words.

■520    ▼aIn  chapter  six,  the  author  provides  a  thorough  analysis  of  the  historical  interpretations  of  Isaiah  7:14.  The  writer  examines  the  earliest  interpretations  leading  up  to  modem  day  explanations  by  recent  scholars.  In  Chapter  seven,  the  author  examines  the  way  the  author  of  Isaiah  used  ['ot]  and  focuses  on  its  usage  in  7:14.  The  chapter  provides  an  analysis  of  the  explanations  of  Isaiah  7:14  and  gives  the  author's  interpretation.  The  final  chapter  is  a  synopsis  of  the  research  and  provides  a  logical  presentation  of  the  dissertation's  findings.
