■520    ▼aInterpersonal  problems  and  reluctance  to  cope  interpersonally  have  been  shown  to  contribute  to  impaired  functioning  and  psychological  problems  among  Christian  ministers.  This  study  examined  the  coping  behaviors  of  a  sample  of  Southern  Baptist  ministers  and  the  effect  of  a  specific  non-trait  factor,  internalized  shame,  on  coping  behaviors.  Ministers  completed  an  online  behavioral  questionnaire  reporting  their  coping  behaviors  in  typical  stressful  situations.  The  questionnaire  categorized  behaviors  into  three  preferred  coping  styles:  intrapersonal,  family,  and  interpersonal.  Participants  also  completed  a  standardized  measure  of  internalized  shame,  the  Internalized  Shame  Scale  (ISS).  Repeated  measures  ANOVA  confirmed  that  pastors  chose  interpersonal  coping  [M=  12.66]  less  often  than  family  coping  behaviors  (M=  17.43)  and  intrapersonal  coping  behaviors  (M=  21.33).  Participant  shame  scores  were  significantly  lower  than  the  non-clinical  normative  sample  [t(209)  =  5.73,p    .001].  Pearson  product-moment  correlation  coefficient  computations  revealed  that  shame  did  not  have  a  significant  relationship  with  intrapersonal  coping  behaviors  [r(207)  =  .054,p  =  .43  8],  family  coping  behaviors  [r(207)  =  -.122,  p  =  .080],  or  interpersonal  coping  behaviors  [  r(207)  =  .082,p  =  .240].  The  study  identified  a  preference  of  ministers  in  the  population  to  seek  intrapersonal  or  family  resources  in  favor  of  interpersonal  coping  resources  but  did  not  find  that  internalized  shame  was  significantly  related  to  these  behavior  patterns.
