■520    ▼aIn  a  study  of  the  beliefs  and  practices  of  the  early  church  one  of  the  many  things  a  person  will  find  is  a  practice  of  baptizing  converts.  When  did  this  practice  begin  and  why?  What  was  behind  the  practice  of  baptism  that  influenced  the  early  church  to  practice  this  rite?  Were  there  influences  from  the  Jewish  Community,  or  the  Greek  Mystery  Religions?  Did  the  practice  of  baptism  by  John,  or  the  Qumran  Community,  have  any  influence  on  the  practice  of  baptism?
■520    ▼aChapters  1-2  in  this  study  deal  with  the  background  behind  the  practice  of  baptism  in  the  early  church.  Did  the  Jewish  daily  lustrations  or  their  practice  of  baptizing  proselytes  have  any  bearing  behind  the  early  church  baptizing?  This  is  especially  significant  to  ask  since  many  of  the  early  christians  came  from  the  Jewish  Community.  Is  the  fact  that  the  Greek  Mystery  Religions  practiced  baptism(s)  in  their  initiation  ceremonies  significant  for  trying  to  understand  the  practice  in  the  early  church?  Similarities  may  be  found  within  each  of  these  communities,  but  the  differences  are  significant  enough  that  a  sufficient  answer  as  to  why  this  rite  was  observed  must  be  found  elsewhere.  Such  an  answer  can  be  found  in  observing  that  behind  the  practice  of  baptism  is  the  authority  of  Jesus  Christ.
■520    ▼aChapters  3-4  deal  with  biblical  data:    (1)  Gospels  and  Acts,  and  (2)  New  Testament  Epistles.  The  New  Testament  has  much  to  say,  not  only  regarding  the  ceremony  of  baptism,  but  why  it  was  practiced.  Much  of  this  information  comes  from  documents  written  to  people  who  had  already  been  baptized  encouraging  believers  to  remain  faithful  to  the  Lord  and  live  pure  lives.
■520    ▼aChapter  5  deals  with  testimony  from  the  second  and  third  centuries.  These  writings  provide  us  with  a  picture  of  the  practice  of  baptism  in  the  post-apostolic  era.  During  this  period  there  were  some  changes  made  from  the  first  century  observance.  However,  the  practice  and  reason  behind  the  practice  remained  essentially  the  same.
■520    ▼aChapter  6  is  a  conclusion  to  the  study  and  provides  a  succinct  summary  of  the  practice  and  meaning  of  the  baptismal  rite  in  the  first  three  centuries.
