■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  the  dissertation  was  to  examine  the  portrayal  of  joy  in  the  Gospel  of  Luke  through  analysis  of  terminology,  contexts,  and  characterizations  in  comparison  with  the  parallel  materials  in  the  synoptic  Gospels.  The  terms  for  both  joy  and  sorrow  were  delineated  in  chapter  2.  The  meaning  and  use  of  these  terms  in  the  Gospel  was  the  primary  interest  of  the  chapter.
■520    ▼aChapter  3  compared  and  contrasted  the  portrayal  of  joy  in  the  material  common  to  both  Mark  and  Luke.  Though  Luke  did  assume  many  of  Mark's  tendencies,  such  as  the  ending  of  episodes  with  awe  or  fear,  Luke  clearly  emphasized  joy  in  this  material  more  so  than  Mark.  This  material  established  the  patterns  of  Luke  to  associate  proper  responses  by  the  opponents  of  Jesus  for  improper  reasons,  the  representation  of  Jesus  as  both  the  incarnate  grace  of  God  and  the  model  for  discipleship,  the  response  of  healed  individuals  in  praise,  and  the  response  of  awe  by  witnesses  to  an  event.
■520    ▼aChapter  4  compared  and  contrasted  the  portrayal  of  joy  in  the  material  common  to  both  Matthew  and  Luke.  Because  of  the  nature  of  this  material,  this  chapter  focused  on  both  the  character  and  teachings  of  Jesus.  This  material  contributed  the  unique  instances  of  the  joy  and  awe  of  Jesus  in  the  Gospel  of  Luke.  The  lengthy  teaching  sections  stressed  the  guidelines  for  proper  living.
■520    ▼aThe  largest  block  of  material  was  presented  in  chapter  5,  which  concerned  the  material  distinct  to  Luke.  Luke  added  a  wealth  of  new  terms,  plus  the  birth  and  resurrection  narratives  to  contribute  to  the  portrayal  of  joy.  Luke  also  contributed  the  contrast  of  fear  and  joy  in  this  material.
■520    ▼aChapter  6  set  the  portrayal  of  joy  in  Luke  within  the  framework  of  the  terminology,  the  structure,  the  patterns,  and  the  different  theological  presentations  of  the  Gospel.  Luke  used  joy  to  communicate  to  his  audience  how  the  believer  should  remain  faithful  within  the  context  of  suffering.  Jesus  was  both  the  righteous  representative  of  God  and  the  faithful  sufferer,  who  encouraged  believers  to  endure  trials.
