The Early Christian double-basilica- [e-book]

초록/해제: 요약 : The double-basilican church plan was a specific architectural form developed between 300 and 600 by the early church. In the past it has been studied primarily as a precursor to later medieval architecture or as a specific plan at a particular site, but never as an architectural type which belonged to the earliest stages of Early Christian architecture. The consistency of the plan, two parallel halls, intimately connected and interrelated, and their geographical distribution in the west suggest that the type may have had a specific functional separation between the two halls as a part of its original use and its later development. By investigating related aspects of early liturgy, dogmatic disputes, and the historic situation this study attempts to present a clearer picture of the type as a specific architectural response to the era.

초록/해제: 요약 : While it has been impossible to find a single functional origin for the double-basilican plan, several generally held older theories about the plan, in particular its use as a catechumenate, can now be questioned. As well, this study proposes a number of alternative readings for the group which may one day prove valuable as areas for further research. Some ideas are also offered about the spread of the double-basilican plan during the period, its use and the reasons for its adaptation.
